Galvanization is the coating of metal with "Zinc" against corrosion. Galvanized coating is done in 2 ways, the first is Electro Galvanized coating and the second is Hot Dip Galvanized coating. With the hot dip galvanizing method, the material is immersed in molten zinc (460C°) and the coating process is performed. In this way, oxidation is prevented and the life of metals is prolonged, and air contact is prevented, preventing rusting. Oxygen interacts with the metal and causes abrasion (rust) and the layered parts are separated from the metal, the strength of the metal decreases, the image becomes dirty. Rust is not only a visual defect but also a chemical reaction that corrodes the metal. In galvanized coating, a population is formed on the metal, this population penetrates into every corner, inside, surface and gaps of the metal. Galvanizing is applied to iron or steel. By coating the metal with zinc, wear resistance is increased. Coating is the best way to prevent rust. The thickness of the coating decreases with each passing year, that is, zinc disappears in certain amounts every year, which allows the life span to be determined earlier. Since zinc is more reactive than iron or steel, the zinc galvanized coating corrodes first, protecting the iron or steel underneath.
WHAT IS THE ELECTRO GALVANIZING METHOD? Electro galvanized coating method, 2 electrodes are immersed in a boiler filled with electrolyte, these are the anode and cathode electrodes. Zinc (ZN) is connected to the anode electrode and the material to be coated to the cathode. Electricity is applied with high current, low voltage generator and rectifier and electrons are removed from the anode and adhered to the cathode, that is, to the surface of the material. As a result of the process, passivation is performed to ensure that the coating is permanent and the coating process is completed. With Electro Galvanized, the properties of the material do not change, it can be welded, but in the hot dip method, metallic values change and cannot be welded. In Electro Galvanizing, the coating will never lift, while in hot dip galvanizing, the coating may lift. In electro galvanizing the coating is made with "PURE" Zinc, in hot dip galvanizing it is made with Alloy Zinc.
